As far as Future Cheer competitions go I was quite disappointed with Winter Wonderland.
My main issue was with the lack of venue staff leading to people clogging up walk ways and staircases by sitting on them or filling them with bags (due to lack of proper seating and bag drop areas). I’m currently 5 1/2 months pregnant so having to climb over bags and dodge around people, while trying to walk down stairs is not the easiest or safest task in the world!!
Another thing which bothered me was the location of the warm up area. As this was based on a mezzanine area over the main arena, we couldn’t hear our music at all during warm up due to the music system in the main arena being considerably louder. Also the staff member for the warm up seemed to also be the coach for the team who were warming up just before us so we were left standing at the registation desk for a while before she even noticed we were there.
Overall I never expect the standard of routines to be that great this early on in the season, and I saw some truly shocking routines. Some were just dangerous, especially some of the tumbling skills teams were throwing. I did tweet about this issue but was asked by Future Cheer to delete it, I understand that it was’t their choice for people to be throwing skills which they clearly do not have, but I hope that they address it strongly on the score sheets.
One thing which really bothered me though was teams putting out good routines, hitting all their skills and having highly talented athletes, but who all looked completely bored and as though they were all hating being there. I’m not going to specifically name squads but some of the more well known teams genuinely looked miserable on the floor!
Having said that I did see some great routines throughout the day and I’m hoping that those teams will keep getting stronger over the season ready to put out incredible performances in summer.
What did you think of the event?
